Greece
The main fighting part of Greece was Sparta. Life in Sparta was harsh. The spartans were tough and born to fight.Their army was the same size as Athens.When Spartans conquered the citizens of that civilization and made them helots, or slaves owned by Sparta. They had to do all the farm work in Sparta which left more time for war and training.At age 7, young boys left the house to go to the barracks. At 12, they learned using swords and spears.At 20, they became a soldier. Most of a Spartans childhood was dedicated to war.Also, girls did a simialr training but not as harsh. Both
Similar to Greece, Rome was usually in war.Most of these civilizations were spending time at war. Both were big civilizations with big armies. Greece had a lot of training at young ages in Sparta were as in Rome the soldiers were usually trained older and usually fought for a long time. In Sparta death in war was recieved better than it was in Rome. It was actually recieved well.Greece and Romes military were similar. |
Rome
Rome had good geographical features which helped them in the war. The hills made their hometown easy to protect. Therefore the opposing army would also have to climb up the hills.Also similar to war, at the Coloseum, gladiators or slaves captured at war would joust to the death.If the crowd disliked it the gladiators would die.The normal roman soldier would wear various types of armor.They used pick axes to build camps.The average roman soldier was a citizen and had been serving for at least twenty five years. |
